BENEFITS OF Sculptra Aesthetic / PLLA Injections

What Is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a biostimulatory injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). It’s different from conventional fillers: rather than “filling” immediately, it stimulates your body’s own collagen production over time.  The microparticles of PLLA act as a scaffold in the deeper dermis, inducing neocollagenesis (new collagen formation) over weeks and months. Sculptra is FDA-approved for correction of facial wrinkles and volume loss (e.g. nasolabial folds) when used properly.

How Sculptra Treatment Is Prepared & Administered?

1. Consultation & Planning: We assess facial structure, volume loss, skin condition, and your goals.

2. Reconstitution: Sculptra comes as a powder. It must be reconstituted with sterile water (and sometimes lidocaine) to form a smooth suspension for injection.

3. Injection Technique: The injector uses a micro-needle or cannula to inject into the deeper dermal layers using a grid or crosshatch pattern. It’s important to distribute evenly and avoid overcorrection.

4. Post-Injection: Massage Immediately after injection, the area is massaged to smooth out the product and reduce risk of nodules. Because Sculptra doesn’t immediately add volume (aside from fluid), results are gradual as collagen builds.

Benefits & What Makes Sculptra Special

• Gradual, natural-looking volume restoration as collagen forms

• Long-lasting effects: results can last up to 2 years or more for many patients

• Improves skin thickness, firmness, and texture beyond just filling lines

• Lower risk of “overfilled” look because the augmentation is gradual

• Biocompatible, biodegradable, and safe when used by experienced injectors

Common Treatment Areas

• Nasolabial folds (“smile lines”)

• Marionette lines

• Cheeks (to restore midface fullness)

• Temples

• Jawline and chin (for contouring)

• Skin laxity or volume loss in the lower face

How Many Treatments Are Needed & Timeline

• Most patients require 2 to 3 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results.

• Because the effect is gradual, you’ll begin to see improvements in 4–8 weeks, with further enhancement over months as collagen builds.

• The effects may last up to 24 months (2 years) in many cases.

• Maintenance sessions may be recommended yearly or per individual needs.

Aftercare & Recovery Guidelines

To support optimal healing and safe results:

• Massage the treated area gently for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for at least 5 days to distribute the PLLA evenly and reduce nodule formation.

• Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs, or excessive heat for 24–48 hours post-treatment.

• Keep head elevated and avoid pressure on the face (sleeping face-down) for the first night.

• Minor swelling, bruising, redness, or discomfort is normal and typically resolves in a few days.

• Use gentle skincare; avoid retinoids, strong acids, or aggressive treatments in the first week.

• Avoid heavy makeup or interfering products for 24 hours.

• Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy lifestyle to support collagen production.

If lumps or firmness develop, inform your injector,  in many cases they can be managed early.

Risks, Considerations & Contraindications

• Temporary side effects: swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness at injection sites

• Nodules / small lumps under the skin are possible if product is not evenly distributed or massage isn’t done properly.

• Infection (rare)

• Overcorrection can be problematic because Sculptra is not easily reversible.

• Not suitable for patients with hypersensitivity to PLLA or history of hypertrophic scarring or keloids.

• Avoid injecting into blood vessels (risk of vascular occlusion).

• Care must be taken regarding dilution, injection technique, and spacing of sessions.
